Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn (2013) Review by Ed_Blackadder from Mrs Miggins' Pie Shoppe
We, as consumers, are quite easily parted from our hard earned cash, byclever advertising campaign slogans or the fancy title of a movie, andit's for this very reason we read reviews such as this. A mere glanceat the name "Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn" conjures up images of thegiants of 70's and 80's Gangster Cinema, Robert De Niro, James Woodsand Al Pacino to name but three, and of course, that's the whole point.The film was originally titled the rather ungainly "Goat" which, as itturns out is the name of the car owned by Bobby Baldano. After viewingthis low budget, mild mannered gangster movie I can understand why thename was changed as it's not going to be a film that everyone will beproclaiming the new "The Godfather". I could be wrong but I'm quietlyconfident.
Bobby Baldano is played by William DeMeo who starred in Searching forBobby D. He also, coincidentally, had a part in Analyze That, starringMr De Niro no less, but he seems to have had more than his fair shareof small roles playing Italian American hoods but practise makesperfect, and he is rather good at it. In actual fact the cast was thisfilm's strongest feature with an impressive list of reasonably wellknown actors of varying degree of talent with no one doing anythingoutstanding but rather, gave solid performances. The casting washowever another matter, as director Paul Borghese went for thestereotype as opposed to trying something a bit different, taking arisk or attempting subtlety, which is something this entire productionlacked. Borghese spoon fed us everything, like the way we knewprecisely who and what everyone was simply by looking at them and eventhe way the clues were practically under lined in bright red pen, itlacked finesse.
What sticks out more in this Indie is what it didn't have instead ofwhat it did. No sex, no drugs, little swearing, too few killings, nocar chases, I mean, the mind boggles, a gangster film? It has an Rrating but with very little editing it could have been a PG 13 and thestory wouldn't have been affected. The music was mostly Hard Rock tokeep us in the mood but the script was a touch lethargic for such asoundtrack but lip service was paid to the source of inspiration, withan Italian Aria sounding up, in an attempt at style, during a slowmotion execution.
While this film has it's faults, it does have nice touches of stylehere and there and the production was quite decent when you considerthe budgetary restraints. The acting was pretty good all round and theDirector did reasonably well with all at his disposal but all thatmight not be enough, I know it wasn't enough for me and I ultimatelyfelt cheated. I felt short changed by falling for a title like OnceUpon a Time in Brooklyn. I wish they had stuck to Goat. I really do.

Whilst the lead guy does have solid presence it wasn't until half waythough that I realised this was some cheap b grade rubbish. All themafiosi tropes are here from makin da bolognese sauce to getting gunneddown at a restaurant to the rat to revenge to you get the idea. Thesoundtrack shifted the tone so wildly that it gives you the feeling ofdifferent editors. They should have stuck to the gritty rock stuffinstead of Italian arias at the hit whilst everyone does in slow mo...Ikid you not. All of it reeks of some student effort: Constant timeshifts...excessive narration...useless scenes. The lead tough guy guycrying while he jerks off?! lol Looks like a tax loss production to me

A friend of mine suggested I see this movie. I understood why she didafter seeing it. The lead actor blew me away. He had incrediblepresence. I love the bad boys. Especially ones that can make you rootfor them. I thought the movie sent a very nice message of what isreally important. I will be watching out for William DeMeo. I reallyenjoyed watching him from the opening scene. The scenes with his fatherArmand Assante were very good. I felt the compassion they felt for eachother. Assante still has what it takes. The scene where he rips intohis son towards the end of the movie is breath taking. I thought themovie had enough action for the story told and I felt all thesupporting characters were very believable. If you are a fan of thisgenre. You won't be disappointed. I will be looking out for the futurefilms of this director Paul Borghese.
